Introducing Peter Murray as our new Musical Director

INTRODUCTION TO PETER MURRAY

Peter studied at St. Andrew's University and began his musical career as Assistant Conductor with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.  After leaving, he was a conductor and musical director for theatre shows all over the country for many years. In London's West End, his shows included 'Jesus Christ Superstar', 'Happy End', and 'Kismet'. Shows in Holland included 'The Mikado' and 'My Fair Lady' with 'The Mikado', 'HMS Pinafore' and 'The Pirates of Penzance' in the USA.  He conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra at the International Festival of Light Music and was a regular conductor for 'Friday Night is Music Night' on Radio Two.
He is a prolific arranger, having arranged all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas and 'Bugsy Malone' for Warner-Chappell.  His recordings include all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas and 'The Songwriters' for BBC Enterprises.  He is now Director of Music at St. Catherine's, Ludham, as well as being a very busy teacher.

Many thanks also to David Kett, our Concert Pianist, Christopher Whiting, our Rehearsal Pianist,  to Joan Wardle for the Narration , Richard Whiley for the Lighting and Sound, to The Dance Shop, High Street, Gorleston for selling tickets and everyone who helped front of house and behind the scenes to make this concert a success.

Celebrations!!
Very many congratulations to Maurice and Ann Jeckells who celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary on 28th September 2007, to Jeannie Gunn for joining the ‘Grandma Brigade’ with the arrival of baby Katherine in August and to Ted Maund who will be celebrating his 88th birthday in December.

Summer BBQ
Many thanks to Maurice and Ann Jeckells for hosting the Summer BBQ on 12th August 2007 and to all the members, patrons and friends who attended.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - 2007
Our AGM took place on 15th May and we were delighted to see a great turn out of Singing Members, Patrons and friends who were all there to support the Society at this difficult time.
The future of the Society, membership and lack of venue for a full production were all discussed at length and the conclusion was that we should perform only concerts for a short time as well as actively encouraging new members.
It was also very pleasing to have a surplus of candidates for the new committee, with so many people prepared to give their time and efforts to help run the Society.

PATIENCE - MAY 2007
Sincere apologies to all our Life Members, Patrons and friends who loyally support our Society and were looking forward to our production of Patience this year. We share your disappointment and hope you understand our reasons for having to cancel the production at such a late stage. Please click here for more information about what happened to this production.

GOOD FRIDAY COFFEE MORNING 2007
Members, patrons and friends gathered at Vivian’s house for the annual Good Friday Coffee Morning. As always, it was a welcome chance to socialise and chat at a time when rehearsals are becoming ever more concentrated. A big thank you to Vivian for organising this very popular event.

Condolences - Spring 2007
It is with deep regret that we report the death of three of our past patrons;
Kay Stubbs who sang with us for several years and then became a patron until beset by ill health.
Barbara Gunn (sister of David Gunn) a staunch supporter for many years passed away suddenly in December 2006.
Margaret Ransome (mother of our secretary Viv Burgess) a loyal patron whose funeral took place on 23rd March .
We offer our sincere condolences to all their families.

Society Christmas Dinner 2006
The Christmas Dinner was held at the Furzdown Hotel, Great Yarmouth on Saturday 25th November 2006 and was well attended by members, patrons, friends and their families. Many thanks for Wendy Gooch for organising the event and to everyone who provided entertainment on the night.

Gala Performance - October 2006
The Society were invited to perform a Gilbert & Sullivan ‘Gala Performance’ at the Marina Theatre, Lowestoft on Saturday 7th October 2006.
The programme included some of the best known excerpts from Gondoliers, Pirates, Princess Ida, Mikado, and HMS Pinafore.  It was fully staged and costumed and the setting was a Victorian drawing room where the audience were guests of the Lord of the Manor.

We are very grateful to anybody who encouraged their ‘sisters, cousins and aunts’ to come along and support us - and to anybody who contributed in any way to its undoubted success. We were very well received at the theatre and our most grateful thanks go to our MD and accompanist David Kett, producer Linzi Richards and all the soloists who did us proud.

Our grateful thanks also go to Vivian Burgess (who did far more than a secretary is expected to do), Maurice Jeckells for co-ordinating with the theatre and Dorothy Pearce for compiling the programme.

Diamond Wedding Celebrations!
Congratulations to Ted & Amy Maund who celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary on 1st June 2006. Ted and Amy have been stalwart supporters of our Society both on and off the stage since 1955 and they have been life Members since 1990. We all wish them many more happy years together.

'HMS PINAFORE' - 9th - 13th May 2006
This year’s main production was very successful both on and off stage and there was a sizeable increase in our appreciative audiences. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make this production such a success whether on stage, behind the scenes or in the audience. The Treasurer is very happy with the Box Office takings and we hope our larger audiences will continue to support us for subsequent performances.

GOOD FRIDAY COFFEE MORNING 2006
A change of venue for this year's annual Good Friday Coffee Morning. A big thank you to Bob Boardley for hosting the event and to Vivian for organising it. It was attended by many members and patrons who all enjoyed the chance to socialise, chat and eat Hot Cross Buns.

Valentine’s Fish & Chip Supper & Beetle Drive
The Valentine’s Fish & Chip Supper & Beetle Drive held at St Peter’s RC Church Hall, Gorleston on 18th February 2006 was a great success and raised £108 for our funds. Many thanks to all those who came to support us on the night (especially our patrons) and to Dorothy & Anthony Pearce for organising the event.
